Sumitomo to build ¥5 billion thermal power plant in Myanmar

Sumitomo Corp. said Friday it has won an order to construct a thermal power plant in Myanmar.

The order from Myanmar Electric Power Enterprise, an affiliate of the Ministry of Electric Power, is worth about ¥5 billion, Sumitomo said.

The plant will have two 25,000-kilowatt gas turbines. The first unit is set to launch operations in March 2016 and the second unit in July 2016.

The plant will supply electricity to the Thilawa economic zone and Yangon. The project is funded by soft loans from the Japanese government.

The turbines and generators will be supplied by Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Ltd.

Taihei Dengyo Kaisha Ltd. will be in charge of other necessary equipment.
