Myanmar to build high-speed internet for SEA Games

Myanmar will build a high-speed internet cable network in time for the upcoming 27th South East Asia Games in December this year.

The fibre-optic cable network is expected to carry up to 30 Gigabytes per second of data transmission and will connect Yangon, Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw where the games will be held. The government has already signed an agreement with three Japanese companies; Sumitomo, NEC and NTT to build the network.

“All our engineers have arrived in the country for the project which is expected to be completed by the end of November this year. It will also connect the main stadiums [in the cities]. Myanmar’s government will need such communication facilities for the SEA Games,” said Mr. Y Benino, of the Sumitomo Corporation.

Myanmar will be hosting the 27th South East Asia Games from 11 December to 22 December 2013. Events will be held in the capital Nay Pyi Taw, as well as in Yangon and Mandalay.
