Thai SCG to establish cement factory in Myanmar

The Siam Cement Group (SCG), Thai largest cement company, will start building a cement plant next year at Taninthayi Region, Myanmar, SCG’s country manager Soontornpol Veerapravati said.

“SCG is planning to manufacture its main products in Myanmar and willing to open four retail stores in Yangon, Mandalay Nay Pyi Taw and one other major city. The plan is also to expand more stores in other cities in the future,” Soontornpol said.

SCG products have entered Myanmar for many years although the plan to establish the cement factory is just a recent move.

The cement is currently in short supply in Myanmar and only 15 cement factories are running in the country.

The government is granting more permits for building cement factories in Myanmar.

SCG is also cooperating with other Asean countries including Vietnam, Laos, Malaysia and Singapore in the construction business in these countries.

At least 22 million tonnes of the elephant-logo cement from SCG are imported to regional countries including Myanmar every year.

Apart from cement, the company also produces chemical, paper and construction material.

Thai investors have invested a total amount of US$9.57 million in Myanmar.
