Myanmar to upgrade international highways

Myanmar is undergoing the process of asphalting and expanding its international highways as the country prepares to enter the Asean Economic Community (AEC) in 2015, according to the Ministry of Construction.

The 12-foot-wide international highways such as the Asian Highway, Bimstec Highway, and GMS Highway are being widened to 24 feet.

Interstate highways are also being expanded to 12 feet wide asphalt roads.

The ministry will also construct permanent concrete bridges along both international and interstate highways.

Myanmar is in discussions with the Korea-based Korea Expressway Co to construct three road sections, including the Kawkareik-Mudon Road.

Myanmar is also implementing road and bridge projects in the region with Official Development Assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
