Myanmar to expand GSM phone coverage to ASEAN states

The Myanmar telecommunication authorities will expand GSM phone coverage to ASEAN member countries, a move expected by June, a local weekly reported in this week's issue.

Discussions are ongoing between Myanmar and most of the ASEAN member countries to expediate the move which is also aimed at attracting more foreign investment into Myanmar, the Popular News said.

The GSM sim cards of China and Vietnam have been in use in Myanmar under a pilot project since Myanmar's annual gems emporium was held in March last year and GSM mobile phone coverage from ASEAN member countries was also allowed in December last year when Myanmar was announced as alternate chairman of the regional bloc in 2014.

Allowing mobile phone coverage reciprocally, the communication system will be eased during the 2013 Southeast Asia Games to be hosted in Myanmar.

Meanwhile, the authorities is installing 30 million more lines of GSM mobile phone phase by phase through a five-year plan in cooperation with private companies.
