Air Kanbawza launches new domestic routes

Myanmar private airline Air Kanbawza launched three new domestic air routes from Yangon to border towns of Myitkyina, Kawthaung and Kalay on Tuesday in a bid to facilitate passengers traveling in the region, sources with the airline said Wednesday.

Using new aircraft ATR 72- 500, Yangon-Myitkyina flight is operated twice a week while Yangon-Kawthaung six days a week and Kalay once a week.

At present, the airline flies to Nyaung U, Mandalay, Heho, Tachileik, Dawei and Myeik.

Besides, it plans to fly to more domestic destinations such as Thandwe, Lashio and Sittway using the new aircraft.

Air Kanbawza was established on April 2 this year and has been flying a number of domestic destinations from Yangon.

It is owned by the Myanmar private company group of Kanbawza, which also operates such businesses as agriculture and banking.

Meanwhile, there are five other domestic airlines in Myanmar including one state-owned, the Myanmar Airways, and four private- run ones -- Air Mandalay, Yangon Airways, Air Bagan and Asian Wings.

There is also another Myanmar airline, the Myanmar Airways International (MAI) flying solely to foreign destinations.

In a latest move, the Kanbawza took over the MAI in May 2010 for continuous operation under the government's privatization plan, buying up 80 percent stake of the airline with the remainder continued to be held by the government.
