Overview: export markets for Myanmar mango

Mango season runs from April to July and the fruit is exported to Singapore, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates and China, which is the biggest buyer and purchases the fruit via border trade.

The main mango growing areas are in Mandalay Region and northern Shan State, which produces a slightly delayed crop.

U Soe Than Min Din, the general secretary of the Myanmar Fruit and Vegetable Producers and Exporters Association, said while there are higher prices to be found in Singapore, it’s more expensive and difficult to export there.

More than 30,000 tonnes of mangoes were exported last year, earning about US$12 million, he said, adding that exports in 2009 were about 30 percent higher, at about 44,000 tonnes. He expects to export about 50,000 tonnes of mangoes this year.
