Increase in Myanmar garment export by 30%

Myanmar's garment export amounted to 243 million U.S. dollars in the fiscal year 2010-11 which ended in March, up 30 percent from over 187 million dollars in 2009-10, a local weekly report said Wednesday.

Japan took up 34 percent of Myanmar's garment export followed by Germany, Spain and South Korea.

Despite strong earthquake in Japan in March, Myanmar's garment export to the East Asian country remain unaffected, the Messenger News said, adding that Myanmar Garment Manufacturers Association ( MGMA) has extended its membership to factories in foreign countries ordering Myanmar garments and such membership has reached 209 in 2011 from 154 in 2007.

Myanmar started to export garments in 1960 and the export was extended to Japan, Germany, South Korea and European countries in 2007.

Myanmar garments have also obtained markets in Brazil, Argentina, South Africa and Turkey.

At present, aimed at raising the quality and quantity of garments, the MGMA has run courses dealing with garment sewing techniques and administration since 2009.
