Russia sees "huge potential" in business cooperation with Myanmar

There is a huge potential for mutually beneficial cooperation in such areas as exploration and mining of minerals, hydrocarbons, rare earth metals, construction, agriculture, and military-technical cooperation, said the deputy chairman of Russian State Duma Yuri Volkov in a meeting with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar (Burma) U Min Thein which took place on the 8th of April in Moscow.

During the meeting, the Vice-Speaker of the State Duma expressed deep satisfaction about the democratic reforms in Myanmar. He stressed the special importance of the parliamentary elections that took place earlier this year and the transfer of real power to the civilian government. According to Volkov, the profound political changes have opened vast prospects for Myanmar's integration into international processes, including the development of Russian-Myanmar relations.

"Today, trade and economic ties between Russia and Myanmar are negligible, a little more than $ 100 million. Meanwhile, the potential for mutually beneficial cooperation in such areas as exploration and mining of minerals, hydrocarbons, rare earth metals, construction, agriculture, and military-technical cooperation is huge, "- said vice speaker. He urged the ambassador to facilitate contacts between the Russian and the Myanmar business, tourism and trade.

In his response, Ambassador of Myanmar has assured that the new leadership of the country is set to develop cooperation with Russia in various fields. Russian business, Russian tourists in Myanmar are welcomed with joy, he said.

Volkov expressed Duma’s leadership readiness to sign an agreement on inter-parliamentary cooperation between the two countries. As a first step in this direction, he offered an invitation for an exchange of official visits of parliamentary delegations between the two countries this year.
