Multi-billion Dawei deep-sea port project under way

With full support from the Thai government, Italian-Thai Development, Thailand’s largest construction firm has started building a US$8.6 billion deep-sea port and industrial estate on the Andaman seacoast for the Myanmar government, news sources reported.

Thailand is hoping to create a more efficient, less congested route for its exports to Europe and the Middle East. The new port, Dawei port, would be 10 times the size of Laem Chabang, Thailand’s largest port, on the Gulf of Thailand.

Japanese Nippon Steel is said to be a potential investor in the Dawei port project, according to international reports. The project will include a coal-fired power plant, an industrial center, oil and gas pipelines and an eight-lane highway, according to Thailand’s National Economic and Social Development Board.
